PCB Connectors
SV Microwave's PCB connectors deliver high-speed signal integrity and easy integration onto printed circuit boards. They are designed to minimize signal distortion and ensure consistent electrical performance. These connectors are available in solderless and soldered attachment styles, with configurations in edge launch and surface mount to suit various applications. PCB connectors are essential for routing RF signals to and from boards, but the process is complex. SV designs various PCB connector styles and the requisite PCB footprints to maintain optimal performance
Connector Attachment Styles
Solderless: Simplifies assembly and reuse by using screws for attachment.
Soldered: Provides a strong, durable connection, ideal for rugged environments and heavy use.
Connector Placement Options
Edge Launch: The best-performing option, offering a collinear transition from coax to PCB. However, this placement may require careful consideration due to limited board real estate and proximity to the target.
Surface Mount: This option is launched perpendicularly to the PCB and allows flexibility in placement, as it can be placed anywhere on the board. However, perpendicular launching can affect performance due to the right-angle transition of the transmission line.
Common Challenges and SV Solutions
Soldering Issues: Precision soldering often requires extensive skill and expensive tools. SV offers different solutions to solve this issue. These solutions include the 30° Solderless Compression Mount Connectors, which deliver edge launch performance anywhere on the board; Edge Lock Connectors, which feature tapered pins to hold connectors firmly to the PCB during reflow, eliminating the need for complex fixturing; and Pre-Tinned Connectors, which prevent gold embrittlement risk, simplifying assembly.
Bulky Connectors: SV’s compact multi-port connectors provide high-density solutions. Distribution is available for 2, 4, and 8-port SMPM, SMPS, and Mini-D RF connectors. Using SV Microwave's Humboldt Builder, you can design and configure your own Multiport Harness.
PCB Attachment Damage: PCB Connectors with built-in thru-legs offer a robust mechanical bond when soldered, available in both surface mount and edge launch styles. Quarterback and Threaded SMPM products also reduce mating forces while maintaining reliable retention.
PCB Footprint Design Challenges: SV provides encrypted models for PCB connectors in CST and HFSS for full system simulation, with custom designs available to meet specific project and PCB stack needs. These are available for all PCB products.
